Some people say a dog can change your life and in my case, Zooey my heart-dog, absolutely did. I still remember the first day I met her at the local pound over 17 years ago in San Luis Obispo. It felt like one of those quiet, unmistakable moments where everything clicks. Having a herding dog was a dream of mine and after a couple hours at the center’s adoption yard of playing tug-o-war and fetch I knew she was coming home with me.
She got me off the couch and out of my comfort zone; she nudged me into the world! The back roads, the long walks and hikes, conversations with strangers turned into lasting friendships, and all the adventures local and not probably would have been skipped if I were alone. She was definitely the social butterfly between her and I, always at my feet greeting everyone and extending your fur to lay on. Wherever we went, she made it feel like home. So much of my life was shaped around whether she could come along and honestly I wouldn’t have had it any other way. When she passed, the day after the outpour of messages and calls from my friends sharing stories reminded me of why dogs are the best companions ever and how much effect they can have on human beings. All the photos I took of her, my friends shared, etc - I will cherish forever.
My friend Rose Steen drew a series of sketches of Zooey and one of those sketches became a sticker. It was shared with friends, and they all wanted one so I decided to turn it into something I can share with everyone.
